ORAL MEDICINE & RADIOLOGY

Oral Medicine & Radiology is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on the accurate diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the oral cavity, teeth, and maxillofacial region. This speciality acts as a vital link between dentistry and medicine, helping in the early detection of various oral and systemic conditions. Research has shown that many systemic diseases show early signs in the mouth. These conditions can present with different clinical signs and symptoms in the oral cavity. Early assessment and diagnosis are therefore crucial, as timely management can help prevent disease progression and support overall health.

IMPORTANCE OF ORAL DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is the foundation of all healthcare practice. Oral diagnosis, also referred to as oral examination in dentistry, plays a crucial role in effective patient care. It helps in early detection, accurate identification, and timely intervention at the correct site. A proper and thorough diagnosis guides the dentist in planning the most appropriate and effective treatment for patients, ensuring better outcomes and overall oral health management.

Various internal and external tests, examinations, evaluations, and diagnostic procedures are used to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Dentists rely on several tools such as X-rays, probes, diagnostic dyes, saliva tests, and other aids to reach the correct conclusion. This diagnostic process helps the dentist to:

  1. Identify the exact cause or source of infection or symptoms
  2. Help the patient better understand their oral and dental health
  3. Enable the dentist to plan and deliver the most appropriate and effective treatment

ROLE OF DENTAL XRAYS

Dental X-rays are the backbone of modern dentistry. They offer a clear view of the internal structures of the mouth, teeth, and surrounding bone. Many conditions affecting the tooth roots and supporting structures can only be accurately diagnosed using X-rays. They provide essential information that helps dentists plan the most appropriate dental treatment. Dental X-rays can be used to identify the number, size, and exact location of teeth.

There are several types of dental X-rays, with periapical and panoramic radiographs (OPG) being the most commonly used. Periapical X-rays focus on one or two teeth in detail, while a panoramic X-ray captures the entire mouth in a single image, including both upper and lower teeth. It is taken from outside the mouth and helps detect cysts, jaw disorders, and bone abnormalities. Other commonly used radiographs include occlusal X-rays, bitewing radiographs, cephalometric X-rays, and advanced imaging techniques such as Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Advanced imaging like CBCT plays a vital role in detailed evaluation of bone and surrounding structures, especially for procedures such as dental implant placement. CBCT is considered the gold standard for hard tissue assessment, offering 3D visualization and helping dentists evaluate risks and plan treatment with greater accuracy.
